My glove collection is a lot like my wife’s shoe collection. We both have way more pairs than we need, but never seem to have the right ones when we need them. At least that’s what she says. It’s nice having heated grips on the F800 GS, but for cold weather riding, I’ve never had that perfect pair of gloves that is warm enough for sub-freezing temperatures, but not too bulky that they don’t interfere with the throttle, clutch, etc. Previously, I relied on a pair of Cloudveil Troller ski gloves, more or less a leather insulated spring glove. The Klim PowerXcross glove seems like a crossover snowmobile/motorcycle glove. This pair came to me from Motorcycle Superstore, as I was the happy recipient of a gift card from a relative during the holidays. My first impressions:

I read the user reviews on other Klim gloves which seemed to indicate their sizing ran a little small. I normally wear a medium in just about everything, but one thing I hate is when gloves are too small, and when you curve your hands around the throttle or hand grips, they pull on the ends of your fingers. That will really make your digits go numb. Best to have a little extra room, but not too much. I ordered the size Large in the PowerXross, and they are spot on. My advice, go a size up from what you normally wear.

Top shelf materials and construction. I love just about anything made from Schoeller Keprotec material. These also feature Clarino palms and a full Gore-Tex liner, so they are supposed to be waterproof (guaranteed). We’ll see. Perhaps I have found the perfect cold weather moto glove?

So what’s on your moto list for Santa? There are so many farkles I have been lusting after for the upcoming moto season, things to make my bike ride better, things to make my riding more comfortable, things to keep my body intact in the event of an “off.” Most of them are rather big ticket items, so I didn’t put any of these on my list for my family to think about. I didn’t drop any subtle hints like “Gee, I’d really like that $1,200 KLIM Rally jacket. So Santa, this one is for you: I’ve been pretty good this year. I’ve had a few ups and downs. I had one mishap that scared the bejeezus out of me, and escaped with nothing more than a bad ankle sprain which is still quite bothersome when I go skiing, but I won’t complain. At least I’m skiing. But just in case you have any room left in the sled, here are a few things I wouldn’t mind under the tree:

1. KLIM Rally Jacket and Pants (Size small jacket. Size 32 pants).
2. Spot II Satellite GPS Messenger and 1-year subscription. Just in case.
3. Scotts Steering Stabilizer for the BMW F800 GS.
4. Renazco Custom Saddle. Without the 15 month wait.
5. Set of Xenon(HID) + Fog lights for the BMW F800GS from Touratech.

I believe, Santa, I believe.

Well, we did it. Chris Bowes aka New Chris picked me up at about 11:00 am and we drove down to BMW Motorcycles of Salt Lake City to pick up his new 2010 Lava Orange F800 GS. The dealership was crawling with all sorts of eye candy, it was hard to stay focused on the task at hand. We were immediately greeted by Mike the owner, but he had to deal with a demo F800 that had been dumped on a test ride. Pretty stressful actually, the demo bike was trashed! Chris’ new bike was inside, adorned with the BMW aftermarket hand guards, and a sweet set of SW Motech engine protector bars. I’ve been shopping lately for engine bars, and had previously been looking at Adventure Spec and Alt Rider models, but I must say, the SW Motech version in now in the consideration set.

Chris' new rig, all shined up and ready to go.

Before leaving the dealership, we had an enlightening chat with Mike about the current state of affairs. Now I won’t get into the politics here, for fear of dropping a pin on the spectrum of left to right for myself or the others involved. Let’s just say we were marveling at the craziness of how changing media influences our so-called modern society to be so quickly polarized and ill-informed. The old “I read it on the internet so it must be true argument.” The three moto scholars dropped some big names: Thomas L. Friedman, the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynahan. Then, Tom Paine was invoked, something like:

“When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon.”

Or perhaps it was this:

“Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.”

Or perhaps it was more relevant to motorcycling:

“Lead, follow, or get out of the way.”

Not the sort of discussion you expect in a motorcycle shop, but I suppose you should always be open to the possibility of surprise and delight, otherwise life can get pretty dull, pretty quick.

Mike and Chris, talking shop, politics, religion, football, just kidding.

I rode the bike back to Park City for Chris because he hasn’t put much time in on a moto for a few years and he was not so sure about having his first ride in Utah be in afternoon traffic on I-15. The bike rode like a charm, and Chris followed me all the way up the hill, until I parked in his driveway 3 houses down. I took one last parting shot of Chris sitting on the new bike, before walking back to the IAATB home office.

New Chris. This is how it all started. New neighbor Chris has always wanted a bike. New neighbor Chris was walking by my open garage one day and saw my F800 GS. New neighbor Chris borrows Long Way Round DVD and watches every episode with wife. New neighbor Chris does some shopping online and considers getting a GS 1200 Adventure. I promptly talk new neighbor Chris out of such silliness. New neighbor Chris goes to BMW Motorcycles of Utah and the rest is history. I’ll be the designated driver to get the new baby up the hill, happy that our little gang has just added a new member. Please take a moment and welcome Chris to the posse in the comments section. We’ll take some pics of the mini adventure for a follow-up post.

I’ve recently been reading a lot about air filter issues on BMW F800 GS models. A few of my readers have reported taking their bikes in for service recently (in the last 60 days), and having BMW swap out a new filter no questions asked. F800Riders.org has a thread going about this, here is the link to the air filter thread. I was pretty amazed to take my bike in for the 6,000 service and not have the dealer say anything about an air filter issue or recall. But after hearing horror stories of air filters delaminating (paper filter separates from the rubber gasket material, then gets sucked into the airbox, letting all sorts of nastiness into the motor), I decided to take mine apart and inspect it. The good news: after taking off the body panel, and inspecting the filter, mine was dirty, but still intact. The bad news: definitely no signs that my dealer got in there during the 6,000 mile service and even took a look at it. What about you? Have you checked your air filter on your BMW F800 GS? It takes about 20 minutes to do it, and you will have peace of mind if you see it with your own eyes.

It’s not just a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo. It reads like a good mystery story, complete with a woman scorned, forensic hard drive analysis, and lots of names of other cyclists who now are going to have to do some ‘splaining. I’m talking about you, Nathan O’Neill. I’ve raced in a few races with O’Bee back in the day when I was still trying to race with the big boys. Got my ass kicked by him and many others. But I guess I was one place better than I thought. I have good, close friends who were at one time team mates with O’Bee. I wonder if their salaries would have been a little better had O’Bee not been on their team? How much team budget did this jackass eat up? What races did they not get chosen to go to, because O’Bee was on the roster? Who knows. What I do know is this, regarding the money we pay in license fees and club fees to USA Cycling, too much of it is going to attorneys tied up in arbitration hearings for dopers! We the dues paying members are paying for this shit! I propose to USA Cycling, that every time a cyclist is sanctioned, results nullified, and ordered to pay back winnings, they should also have to pay back every licensed rider and club a portion of the legal fees incurred by USA Cycling. That’s where the money is going. What do you think?

1. Cyclocross, Cyclocross, Cyclocross. That’s all I could think about. Even though I recently bought a Specialized Crux Pro, I saw at least 6 different bikes I’d be stoked with. LaPierre, Stevens, Focus, Ridley, Scott, Van Dessel. On the custom artisan side of things, The Argonaut custom bike in the Enve (formerly Edge Composites) might have been my favorite, only slightly ahead of the the Gold Speedvagen.

2. The Lion of Flanders lion symbol is all played out, folks. I’ll admit, I thought it was cool. It’s totally medieval. But for the most part, none of us are Belgian, as much as we want to be associated with toughness, cobbles, and trappiste ales. Ridley can own it because they actually are a Belgian bike company. Ritte is trying really hard, and their bikes look good, but I’m not sure I can think of anything less Belgian than a bike company based in Santa Monica. There were dozens of other cases of misplaced fire breathing lions icons gratuitously peppered on various head badges, banners, logos, etc. Time to find a new coat of arms folks. This one is already taken.

3. When you bump into Eddy Merckx and he is stuffing a sandwich in his cheeks, he’s just a regular guy, just like you and me. Bullshit. He is still Eddy Merckx. And even though I didn’t have my mouth full of panini, when I awkwardly stepped in front of him as he was trying to retreat into the inner bowels of the Merckx booth, I was tongue-tied because I was in the presence of greatness.

4. Alessandro Petacchi doesn’t look as big in real life, and yet he is still larger than life. Ale Jet looks lean and thin, more liking a climbing all-arounder than a dominant sprinter. It was cool to see him casually hanging around the Willier booth. All smiles, just hanging around.

5. Cavendish this. Cavendish that. Everything was all about Mark Cavendish. There were more Cav impressions spread throughout the show than any other cyclist, methinks. It was cool to see one of his sprinting missiles in the PRO booth. A Scott Addict with his new signature PRO stem and bars. Very impressive.

6. Long live the show special. Chrome messenger bags, Chrome shoes, Look Keo or Quartz pedals for $40 a pair. There were ample opportunities to whip out your credit card and bring a little piece of Interbike home with you.

7. A lot of people were happy to say this was the last year of Interbike in Vegas, but the sad thing is what will happen to Cross Vegas? Seriously one of the coolest cyclocross races I have seen. Will there now be a Cross Anaheim event? Tons of spectators, huge international field, UCI status. How long will that take to build up in Anaheim?

8. Can’t figure out why Edge Composites changed their name to Enve. Their new logo just looks like jibberish. Branding fail, big time.

9. Skipping lunch and just doing the buffet lines at Power Bar, Hammer, Clif Bar, etc will only get you so far.

10. Shimano DI2 is still hot. It’s now over a year old in the eyes of the public, and yet there was as much buzz this year, almost as if it were a new product. Maybe people were waiting to see how it worked after a year in the marketplace, but it seems the industry is embracing it bigtime. The winner of Cross Vegas, Francis Mourey, was riding a DI2-equipped LaPierre. Sick.

I really like bikes. It never gets old. Any one of these topics could surely be mined a little deeper as a separate post. Hopefully when I get a little time, I’ll dive a little deeper. More photos coming later.
