Q&A with Joe Parkin, 6 Years In a Rain Cape
15 Jul 2009, written by moto 4 CommentsLooks like my buddy Joe is up to a new project. If you haven’t read Dog In A Hat yet, get on it. Should be required reading for anyone who follows modern cycling. Visit Joe’s latest blog, 6 Years In a Rain Cape, and maybe ask him a question. His head is full of all kinds of knowledge type stuff. I had to post a comment and disagree about whether or not the Tour has been boring thus far. I want to see Lance and Contador fight it out. It hasn’t happened yet. Never mind the fact that their jobs are to win the race, not entertain us, but I miss the drama. Here’s a question for Joe: while riding the Tour, did Alexi Grewal really refer to Bernard Hinault in the French media as “The Gerbil?” Note to readers: back then Bernard Hinault was Michael Jordan to the French, and his nickname was the Badger. Waiting for your answer.

Somehow I can see it. Alexi Grewal was just insane enough to call Hinault “the gerbil” instead of “The Badger” but I don’t have any actual knowledge to support this.
So, do tell …

Classic if Grewal actually DID call Hinault a “VERY close future friend of Richard Gere.” So TC, do you not feel today’s TdF is too calculated, too scripted? What happened to the days of old when the padrons would launch an attack from 150 k, solo’ing over 3-4 mt. passes (i.e. Eddy)? Now it’s “sit on and follow wheels and maybe, just maybe, attack on the final 5k of the final climb — but more likely wait and try to put time in on the TT. Just wondering…

SS, you are a sick man, re the gerbil. As for the scripted nature of the Tour this year, the only thing that is remarkable is the french riders are actually able to win a few stages. Cav is as predictably fast as Petacchi in his brief heyday, but he doesn’t have anyone pushing him, and as much smack as he talks, he is nowhere near as interesting as a Cipo. So yeah, I’m currently bored.

Joey, thought since you were team mates on Coors Light with Alexi, you might have heard some stories. Worth a try.
