The first lying cheat to be exposed is stage 16 winner Mikel Astarloza, who tested positive for good old fashioned straight-up EPO in an out of competition pee party just prior to the start of the Tour.

Looks like my buddy Joe is up to a new project. If you haven’t read Dog In A Hat yet, get on it. Should be required reading for anyone who follows modern cycling. Visit Joe’s latest blog, 6 Years In a Rain Cape, and maybe ask him a question. His head is full of all kinds of knowledge type stuff. I had to post a comment and disagree about whether or not the Tour has been boring thus far. I want to see Lance and Contador fight it out. It hasn’t happened yet. Never mind the fact that their jobs are to win the race, not entertain us, but I miss the drama. Here’s a question for Joe: while riding the Tour, did Alexi Grewal really refer to Bernard Hinault in the French media as “The Gerbil?” Note to readers: back then Bernard Hinault was Michael Jordan to the French, and his nickname was the Badger. Waiting for your answer.

I thought the team time trial was tomorrow, not today? Nobody told that to Team Columbia. What happened in today’s Tour results is going to reverberate throughout the peloton, and give the GC hopefuls plenty to think about as they try to sleep tonight. It’s really no surprise that Mark Cavendish rocked to a 2nd consecutive stage win, he’s clearly the fastest guy in the sprints. Unlike the final 3k leadout his team has perfected to deliver him to the line, today’s win was based largely on the fact that his entire team forced a split in the peloton about 25k out, and left a lot of favorites for the overall losing time today. The entire fricking Columbia team was up front drilling it in the split. Shades of U.S. Postal from the Vuelta years ago, when Bruyneel had the team drilling it in the crosswinds, leaving the hopes of a few GC contenders smashed before they even hit the mountains. Guess who was also in the front group of 29? Yup. Lance and Popo. In terms of the Astana team pecking order: advantage back to Armstrong. It will all get sorted out in tomorrow’s critical team time trial, but Contador is going to have a hard time getting to sleep tonight. Lance is his boogey man.

It must be absolutely electric to be in Europe right now, with all the buzz about the upcoming Tour. Despite the usual Juice News which we like to comment on, there seems to be a lot of speculation about a possible duel between Lance and Contador. Marty forwarded this link to a blog post on Service Course speculating that Contador had one foot out the door and was headed to Garmin. Interesting speculation on what it would do to the dynamic of Vaughters’ outfit. Read for your self and decide. What do you think? Will there be an Armstrong vs. Contador internal battle, like the LeMond vs. Hinault feud? It could be the most exciting thing that has happened in a long time.

Many people might remember Frankenstein climbing his way to the podium in last year’s Tour de France, and winning the Polka Dot climber’s jersey. Nowadays, it seems, the red dots on the jersey stand for the number of times the riders have pricked themselves with hypodermic needles. Kohl reveals details of his transfusions, and gives his opinion that pretty much everyone in the top ten is doing something. On what he was was using, Kohl goes on to say:

“…the blood transfusions were the only “safe” way to cheat during the race without risk of getting caught. Other doping products were used in the weeks and months before the Tour to avoid detection.

“Nothing else, there were too many random controls. Never a testosterone patch,” he said. “Apart from the caffeine, pseudo-ephedrine, painkillers, EPO, human growth hormones, insulin, I took all that before, not during (the Tour).”

Interesting that Kohl describes transfusions as “safe,” to hell with his health, the safety refers to getting caught. In cycling, riding clean to some riders means getting away clean, and nothing more. I guess as we are a few weeks away from the Tour, the distraction of whether or not Lance and Contador will have an inter-team clash will deflect some of the suspicions of which riders are putting extra juice in their morning smoothies. Kohl is an example of someone who went from hero to zero in less than a year, and he’s almost forgotten already. What a beautiful but dirty and cruel sport bike racing is.

As I reflect on the revelations today that Tyler Hamilton has tested positive for the banned steroid DHEA, all I can say is, the sport will not miss him. For whatever the reason, there are too many of these stories out there. Read the newsflash on cyclingnews.com. He is quoted as saying he knowingly took a homeopathic supplement containing the banned substance, knowing full-well that he would be tested out-of-competition, but took it because he was he was fighting depressions and was desperate: “…I was going through a very rough moment and I was desperate. I heard about it and thought I would try it out as an act of desperation…did I take for a banned substance? Absolutely not.”

At first, I had some very negative thoughts on this topic. You can read all the reasons why Tyler resorted to this homo-pathetic supplement rather than go back to a doctor to treat his illness. You can read all the expert’s opinions that conclude although DHEA is banned, it really can’t be considered a performance enhancer. You can read all about the reasons why Tyler has been fighting depression lately, like his ruined 1st career, a career which endeared him to the hearts of cycling fans who admired his gritty ride through the pain attitude (thinking back to riding the entire tour and winning a stage with a broken collarbone). Or his maligned 2nd career riding for the dubious Rock Racing outfit. Read the story and decide for yourself.

Apparently, it seems, the 2nd career has not lived up to the expectations of a fresh start everyone was hoping for, and this young man is troubled beyond the repair that could be given by racing a bike. I raced against Tyler back in the amateur days in New England, in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I have some fond memories of riding in breakaways at a little Tuesday night training race in Plaistow, New Hampshire, just putting the stick to everyone else. I admired him back then for his talent to spare, but later I hated him after getting popped for blood transfusions after his Athens Olympic gold medal. I hated him for his heroic exploits that taught us there was more to pro cycling than Lance Armstrong’s domination of the tour, only to find out the whole thing was a sham. I hated him a little bit for coming back last year and robbing Blake Caldwell of the U.S. Pro Road Racing title, even though deep down there was a tiny part of me that was happy he could still do it. It would have been nice to see the young Caldwell turn the page on the old guys, but Tyler nipped him at the line. I can’t hate the guy anymore. I can only wish him well in his battle against depression, but I am glad he is retiring and getting on with life. Hopefully he can have a life without cycling, and it brings a new beginning that could not be fulfilled by racing again. I think he is doing the right thing by admitting his guilt, retiring from cycling, and trying to get his life together. Good luck.

September is usually a quiet time in the newswires of professional cycling. You usually can get all the news you need by briefly scanning the headlines of cyclingnews.com and velonews.com. Vuelta results, riders changing teams, news from Interbike, then the World Championships. Mainstream sports news, let alone mainstream media rarely picks up any news of cycling unless it’s a doping scandal. But then Lance steps back in from the shadows. Maybe he’s sick of dominating the tabloid headlines with his personal life and wants to get back to the bike. Lance has announced and confirmed he will make a comeback, and all of the sudden, the TODAY show is picking it up, it’s all over ESPN, interviews in Vanity Fair, and the cyclingnews servers are overloading. The bike industry must love it. There’s no doubt that Lance mania has always brought a lot of new people into the sport of cycling. Hopers, dreamers and survivors. There’s no doubt Lance has done more for raising cancer awareness, and giving hope to those fighting the illness. It’s hard to hate the guy for that.

When Michael Jordan came back to play with the Wizards, it was sad. He was older, slower, but he was still Jordan. He could still toss in 45 points, but the Wizards still sucked. The tv commentators called him “Floor Jordan” instead of “Air Jordan” because he lost that skyward step. It was still entertainment, though, and probably the only reason anybody watched the Wizards play. If Lance just shows up, wins a time trial here and there, it will be looked upon as a failure. He has to come back and win. Lance didn’t just win the Tour de France. He dominated his rivals, broke their spirits, and crushed the hopes of a lot of pretenders. His main rivals at the time are all gone: Ullrich, Mayo, Vinokourov, Kasheckin, Basso. All out of the sport for positive doping tests or they are creeping back after serving suspensions (Basso), but won’t ever match up again. So what’s the endgame?

I’m waiting for when he will start working on his next book: It Was All About The Bike After All.

About a month ago, professional bike racer Dave Zabriskie called me to see if I knew of any nice places to stay in Park City or Deer Valley. His coach wanted him to train and sleep at an altitude above 8,000 feet. This was right after I started my new job as Director of Marketing for Deer Valley Lodging. Duh. This was a no-brainer. Thanks to a cycling-friendly General Manager at The Village at Empire Pass, one of our Deer Valley slopeside properties, we were able to set him up with some nice accommodations while he spent time motorpacing behind a scooter on the roads of Park City, and sleeping above 8,000 feet. Dave leaves for Beijing on Sunday, and will be representing the United States in the road race and individual time trial. A former silver medalist in the World Championships time trial, Z is no dark horse in this event. He beat Armstrong in the Tour de France to claim a yellow jersey, and I believe he still holds the record for the fastest ever average speed in a TDF time trial stage. And did I mention that he beat Armstrong, which was sweet. Unlike current time trial world champion Fabian Cancellara, who can’t help being Swiss but often refers to himself in the third person, which I find quite annoying, Dave is pretty down to earth despite being an international star. If you read this recent interview on cyclingnews.com, you have to think he’s got as good a shot as anyone for a medal. As you can see below, Z has shorn the Dirk Diggler moustache which he sported for much of the 2008 season, something we have never seen before in professional cycling.

Good luck Dave. I’ll give you ten bucks if you race with a face mask on.
